Release to the Sea
In collaboration with Project Grace, a foundation for the support of grieving mothers
Project Grace was founded in 2007 by Catherine Bowen Stern and Carole Mahoney, two mothers from Northern California. Inspired by the documentary film, Motherland, which explored grief and loss in another culture, Project Grace is dedicated to providing a unique and transforming option for persons suffering from the loss of a child. While initially chartered to serve grieving mothers, the program has expanded to include fathers, siblings, and other family members in grief. At least two trips are offered each year: one designed exclusively for mothers grieving the loss of a child, and one "open" trip for anyone -- mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents, spouses, friends – wishing to honor a loved one through service. Project Grace seeks to create a safe and supportive environment where grieving individuals come together to share, volunteer, and explore. Project Grace was named in honor of Grace Caldwell Magill 1989 - 2005.

The Greek culture maintains the belief that it is our duty to keep the memory of loved ones alive, but it is also our duty to move to a higher sense of spirituality and continue living. We will learn about the significance of certain days and ceremonial traditions, and we will delve into the music, chants, incense, spices, food and drink that are all ingrained in Greek tradition. "Live to Remember Them," is said at every ceremonial event between family and friends, and our week at sea will be spent doing just that, within a safe and supportive community of mothers. The sea has a natural cathartic ability to heal. In its depth and beauty, the sea can absorb, cleanse, and soften the heart.
"We envision a world where grief is a community event. Through peer support, and by approaching grief in a global, holistic manner, we believe those who have experienced a profound loss can be strengthened, validated, and included. We hope for a world where the lives of those who have been lost are shared and celebrated, and it's understood that anyone can support someone in grief, and anyone in grief can find support."
